5 things you can do right now to make you feel better instantly (emotionally)
Some days just feel all wrong. We wake up emotional, with a heavy heart, flustered or just plain grumpy. And the worst thing is that we don’t even know why. We are just feeling “off”. This is a very common scenario for empaths especially, but we all recognise those days when nothing feels right. Chances are that we are picking up on the collective energy, or we are energetically tapping into someone we love dearly and who may going through a bit of a rough time.
The important question we should ask ourselves is first of all: is this my energy or is this someone else’s? When we sit still with this question, the answer usually arises within little time. And if it is not yours, but that of the collective or a loved one, then you should be able to clear it in no time.
Below is a list of 5 quick and simple things you can do to instantly make you feel better, no matter whether you are going through a bit of a patch yourself, or whether you have (unknowingly) absorbed the emotionally charged energy and mood of others.
1 Have an epic Smudge session
It is now scientifically proven that certain herbs, when burnt, have a medicinal and cleansing effect on the environment. Not only do they kill all kinds of germs and bacteria, but they also neutralise stagnant and negative energies. Is there any science behind it? Oh yes! The scientific paper entitled “Medicinal Smokes” and published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology concluded the following: “We have observed that a 1 hour treatment of medicinal smoke...caused over 94% reduction of bacterial counts by 60 min and the ability of the smoke to purify or disinfect the air and to make the environment cleaner was maintained up to 24 hour in the closed room.” Now, remembering that everything is energy, just a different manifestation thereof, the very same goes for energetic “gunk” floating around in our environment. By using sacred herbs such as White & Blue Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar or the delicious Palo Santo wood (my personal favourite) we can instantly lift the energy in our homes and aura.
2 Go for a Walk
Just 10 minutes walking outside in the fresh air will clear your energy and lift your spirit. 20 minutes out in nature is even better! It’s free, readily available wherever you are and gets you out of the house. You may even meet wonderful new friends on your walk, or bump into someone you haven’t seen for a while. What’s not to like?
3 Have yourself.... a good clear up and sort out
No matter whether you are at home or at work... there is nothing like a good clear up. Remember the law of attraction! Clutter and chaos will only attract more of the same ... So if you are feeling off for no good reason, have a good look around you. Perhaps it is time to have a good old tidy and clean? Whether this is your office desk, the counter top or your home - it always feels better and ready for the next task when it has had a good tidy and clean. And you will notice that whilst you are decluttering your environment, you are doing the same in your mind! When you approach opperation clean up in this way, you won’t be resentful of it either ;) Add a dose of Feng Shui to it to make it more fun and learn a little more about energy flow too!
4 Create a Gratitude Journal or Gratitude Jar
There is the wonderful saying “Gratitude is the door to more Abundance”. And it honestly is! If you feel out of sorts or stuck in a rut with the “why me” pattern, sit down and write a list of all the things you are grateful for. There is ALWAYS something you can be grateful for. Your family, your pets, your home, your job, the fact that you have food on the table tonight, and that you are alive. Better even, create a Gratitude Journal and make it a designated part of the day. Sit down for just 5 minutes every day, and jot down all the things you are grateful for that day. Another lovely way to create a daily Gratitude practice is by starting a Gratitude Jar. Find a beautiful jar of any kind and every day, just write one thing you are grateful for on a piece of paper, fold it up and pop it into the jar. At the end of the year you can have a beautiful ceremony reading through all the notes you wrote throughout the year. Trust me, it will truly be a gratitude explosion and you will be floating on a happy cloud for days!
But I can’t, I hear you say. My mind always wanders off, and I haven’t got enough time... The thing is, your mind will create a thousand reasons NOT to meditate. Because it is just so much easier that way. The moment you decide to override this self-sabotaging thought process, is the moment you will succeed. In small doses first, with a few minutes only, but they will become longer and more settled. And before you know it, you will quite happily sit in meditation for 10 to 20 minutes. They say the shortest meditation is ONE conscious breath. It will instantly reconnect you with yourself. Remember that breath is life, the moment we take one conscious, deep breath into our heart space and belly, we reconnect with the NOW. If you find it hard to meditate on your own, get yourself an app like headspace.com. There are quite a few free versions too, like Calm and Smiling Mind.
So, whatever the reason you may feel yuk, take the power back into your hands and do something about it. These are all simple and easy things you can do anytime, anywhere, and they are great tools to help you manage stress, (mind)clutter and live a happier, more relaxed life. Remember, the choice is always yours. Happiness is a decision!
