Thieves Oil ~ A perfect Essential Oil blend to help avoid colds, coughs and flu


With stormy weather, wind & rain upon us again, I was reminded that it is time to make a little stock of Thieves Oil again to help me fight off those nasty little bugs and viruses that are making the rounds again.

Thieves Oil ~ A natural anti-allsorts

Legend has it that when much of medieval Europe was in the grips of the Plague,the concoction was used by thieves, grave robbers and grave diggers to protect themselves from contracting the plague while robbing the bodies of the ill and deceased.

The original recipe has been handed down through the centuries and has probably not changed much since the 1500s:

  • 40 drops organic Clove Bud essential oil

  • 35 drops organic Lemon essential oil

  • 20 drops organic, fair trade Cinnamon Bark essential oil

  • 15 drops organic Eucalyptus essential oil

  • 10 drops organic Rosemary essential oil

This is a classic recipe, but you can have a little play around by adding a few other essential oils such as Tea Tree, Oregano, Marjoram, Thyme, Sage, Lavender, Juniper Berry, Hyssop, Bay, and Scotch Pine. There is science to it all and it has been proven that this is a powerful combination ~ all of the above oils have either antiviral, antifungal or antibacterial properties and will help nip any developing illness in the bud.

Simply mix the above recipe together into an empty dark aromatherapy bottle with its own dropper top & cap. This is powerful stuff, so please never use this blend in its pure form, always dilute it with a carrier oil for direct application on the skin, or by using 1 or 2 drops mixed in water in a diffuser or traditional oil burner. The general guideline is that the essential oil content should only account for 1-2% of the total formula, whatever medium you are using.

Some of the big Aromatherapy companies claim that it is safe to ingest essential oils with water, but I am personally not comfortable with that, unless under strict guidance and observation of a qualified Aromatherapist. I would never suggest using Thieve's Oil internally.

Here are some safe and easy ways to use this blend:

  • Place 2-3 drops of the essential oil blend in a diffuser or traditional oil burner, Diffuse for about 20-30 minutes.

  • Use a 1-2% dilution rate of the essential oil blend in a base of water or alcohol. Spray onto skin for relief of minor discomforts.

  • Mix the essential oil blend at a 1-2% dilution rate with organic Jojoba or Olive oil. Use as a massage oil for weary muscles and tired feet or dab on skin throughout the day for general support.

  • Mix a 1-2% dilution rate of the essential oil blend with organic Jojoba or Olive oil and rub under the nose or on the chest.

  • Place 1-2 drops in a bowl of hot, steaming water and inhale the steam under a towel.

Easy Coconut Oil Recipe:

If you would always like to have some handy as a little cream to rub on the skin you can use Coconut Oil as a base carrier. Coconut Oil is super easy to get, good for the skin and doesn't cost the earth.

Simply melt a cup of coconut oil in a sterile, clean glass bowl above a gently simmering pot of water (Bain Marie). Once the oil has melted, add 10 to 15 drops of the Thieve's Oil mix and stir well. Then carefully pour the oil into a clean, sterile container. I collect the little one-portion marmalade & honey jars wherever I go and use these. They are a handy travel size and easy to clean & sterilise as they are made of glass. Then let it all set in the fridge and voila, you have got your own Thieve's Oil cream on the go.

Other than that, there is much that you can do to stay healthy throughout the winter season:

  • Eat wholesome, healthy foods with plenty of vegetables and fruit.

  • Spend at least 30 minutes outside in nature every day, no matter what the weather

  • Make sure you get enough sleep,

  • Get plenty of gentle exercise ~ a brisk 30 minute - walk, yoga, a gentle run, all contribute to our bodies staying fit and healthy.

  • Sit in the winter sunshine whenever you can and soak up those rays. Sunlight has been proven to generate wellness and health within us. Enjoy in safe doses (20 minutes a day is a guideline) and with the appropriate protection lotion, if you are sensitive. In fairness though, our winter sun is usually not strong enough to not harm our skin.

  • Meditate regularly and honour your body's needs. Rest when you are tired and treat yourself to something nice every now and then ;) Enjoy a candlelight bath, have that massage, book a pamper day with partner or friends.
